Quill Pens

Bekah and Scott think the best part of hunting season is adding to their feather collections.  This year, Bekah had the bright idea to try writing with them and begged me to buy them some "liquid ink".  I did buy some and I've been waiting for the right time to try it out...i.e. when Alarik is either sleeping or occupied by Dad.  So on Sunday during Alarik's nap time, we got everything out and gave it a try!

It was more difficult than they thought it would be but they were engrossed in the novelty of it so they didn't mind.

We did a little online research for tips on writing with quill pens but they seemed to have more fun just doing it how they wanted.  Besides, some of the instructions involved intricate carving of the quill shaft and I wasn't about to start trying that!

Even if it wasn't great practice for their penmanship, what better way to get Scottie to work on his letters?

Yard Work

We're not the kind of people who rake up all their leaves every year and get rid of them.  We just rake em up for the fun of it!

I think it's time to jump in now!

 That was AWESOME!

Oooo, and they are fun to throw too.

Got a couple in your hair there, Bekah.

Look out Alarik - you're gonna get it!

Hey, where'd Scott go?

There he is!

One Year Later

I just love comparing school pictures from one year to the next so here we go!

Bekah 1st grade to 2nd grade

Scott Preschool to Kindergarten

Alarik's aren't school pictures and of course his comparison is the most dramatic, but still so much fun to see.

Alarik 4 months to 16 months

Wish List

Last year I downloaded a handy little app called "Wish List"

I created a list for each person in our family.  I hadn't used the list since then, but this is about the time of year I start keeping my ears open for good gift ideas and I'd had a few lately that I didn't want to forget so I went to enter them into the wish list app.  Apparently Bekah investigated what the wish list app was all about when she was playing on the ipod one day because here is what her list now looks like and I bet you can tell where my entries end and hers start.
Ha, ha!  Scott to stop talking?  Really Bekah?  Because Scott's not typically the one driving me nuts with incessant jabbering.  :)
And I must explain, the "earmuffs to sleep in" came about because she hates the sound of the wind howling outside her window and claims she never sleeps because of it so she needed earmuffs to block the sound.
Funny stuff.

The Merry Little Christmas Sale will be upon me before I know it.  Last year I played the new baby card and didn't make one darn thing for the sale.  This year I figure I better step it up.

I've been pinning craft ideas on Pinterest for months now and it was time to start making good on some of them so last weekend I got down to work.

I ended up with two craft fails that both involved homemade mod podge.  I had pinned two different recipes for it, the easiest of which was just watered down Elmer's glue.  I only had Elmer's clear, washable glue on hand so I used that.  I'm thinking that's where my downfall was.  The first project I tried with it was tinting mason jars.  Now, the ones on pinterest were so deeply colored and beautiful.  By the time mine dried, the color was barely noticeable. Fail.

My next project was the simple task of mod podging cute scrapbook paper onto nice, sturdy, flip-top cardboard box.  The paper curled at the edges and, for the most part, did not adhere to the box at all.  Fail again.

I did have one success amid all this failure though.  This cute knotted headband made from old t-shirts:
Find the instructions here.  I used the same technique to make some bracelets and I also braided a few bracelets, connecting them the same way the headband was done.  Easy and cute!

I Paid Two Spools of Ribbon for a Day of Peace

We had beautiful weather this past weekend and Saturday was one of those glorious days when my kids played peacefully together nearly all day long.  It usually helps to have another kid or two around to play with and cousin Caden spent the day with us.  The recipe of gorgeous weather, a couple spools of wide ribbon and a goose feather or two kept these three outside and entertained all day long!  I think they were making a club of some sort.  At one point they did come inside to create some badges that they then stapled to their sashes.  I honestly couldn't have cared less what they were doing, as long as they were safe and getting along.  My only complaint for the day was that they left my stapler outside.  That's a pretty good day in my book!

Bekah the Huntress

Is huntress even a word?  If not, it seems like it should be.

Fall around here is mostly about football and hunting.  Jesse took Scott and cousin Caden out to the duck/goose blind one weekend morning and Bekah got to go the next morning.  The boys came home with two geese and Jesse bagged two ducks with Bekah along, plus they nabbed a grouse on the way home.  Here's Bekah showing off the bounty and proud Morgan who retrieved the geese and ducks.
