Feathered and Furry Friends

Everyone in our family really enjoys watching all the birds in our feeders, as well as the rabbits and other furry friends that come into our yard.  This is one of several black squirrels that have taken up residence.  A couple years ago, Jesse started eradicating the red squirrels because they are a nuisance and he read that if you shoo them out, the black and grey squirrels will move in.  Sure enough, they arrived.  We've had as many as seven of them running around the yard at once and they are fun to watch.  When there are that many though, it's almost a little unnerving as they converge on the bird feeder.  You can imagine they are plotting to infiltrate the place and overthrow us!  :)

Two summer's ago we had a couple pairs of oriole's but last year we didn't see any.  This year they arrived again just a few days after we hung out the hummingbird feeders.  They are the prettiest orange color and they really catch Alarik's eye.

One morning while I was getting ready for work, Bekah burst into the bathroom and exclaimed, "Mom, mom! There is a red-headed woodpecker in our bird feeder and that's a big deal because they are unknown in our area!!!"  She had spotted this bird that she didn't recognize and then looked it up in our Birds of Minnesota book and was SO excited at what she found.
