Sandbox Transformation: Phase 1

There's a lot to mow around in our backyard.  One of these things is the sandbox which the kids rarely played in any more.  The big sand pile at the back edge of the yard is a lot more appealing.  So we decided to tear out the sandbox and just have the pile.  The pile is there because we plan to eventually build a whole new playground area...but that hasn't materialized yet.  For now we'll make do with a big fun pile of dirt and while we were at it I decided we should throw together a mud kitchen next door to the sand pile.

Sandbox "before" picture:

The first thing we had to do was shovel all the dirt out of the sandbox and add it to the sand pile.
My little dirt-movers:

Oiy, this kid needs a haircut!!!

Rolling over the logs that will be the legs of the mud kitchen:

Building the mud kitchen:
Seeing as how one of the benefits of this project was intended to be less to mow around, we laid landscaping fabric under the area and created a border with bricks salvaged when we revamped the garden.

And now all that's left is to fill in the area with rocks and outfit that kitchen!
We already have quite a collection of enamalware dishes and other garage sale finds, plus fun stuff from the Target Dollar Spot to get us started.  That's Phase 2, coming (hopefully) soon!

Church Picnic Fun

At the annual church picnic we had lots of good old-fashioned fun including gunnysack races, 3-legged races, tug-of-war and ice cream!

Just Like Dad

Jesse rearranged the living room the other day and he discovered this behind the couch - Scott's black long-sleeve shirt that Bekah had transformed into an EMT uniform.
And there was even his black dress pants with a toy blood pressure cuff

We tried to get Scott to model it, but he wouldn't.  Oh well, thought it was darn cute anyway.

Alarik & Chicken Nuggets, Reunited

There's a lot of things you miss when you're out camping.  Things like a comfortable bed, cell phone reception and showers.  Of all the things you might miss though, Alarik missed his beloved chicken nuggets most of all.

The night we came home I baked some up since it was easy and because I didn't have much other food in the house to work with.

It was a happy reunion!

July 4th Camping 2013: Just more camping fun

Our last full day was full of more relaxing and camping fun.  The kids had their bikes along and they put on a lot of miles going 'round and 'round the loops.  Here's Scott thinking he's funny on Alarik's little bike.

Alarik biked a lot too and he walked even more.  It was nice to have all these big kids around to help watch him!

Play hard, nap hard: He really had issues with that air mattress!

Trying on Scottie's fishing hat.

 And, of course, more swimming:

Smaller tub this time, but warm soapy water is the main ingredient anyway.  Even though we were going home in the morning, he was too grubby to send to bed without trying to wash off at least a few of the layers of dirt!

July 4th Campin 2013: July 5th

Friday the 5th started off with more ladderball for these two boys:

It started out pretty rocky for Bekah who got her leg slammed in the camper door by Alarik and, though it wasn't a big deal at all, copped a major B.A. afterwards.  We had a talk about that.

Alarik agreed with me that it was no big deal.

I was pretty impressed that after our talk, Bekah actually worked hard to turn her mood around.  So later when she very politely asked me if I would take her swimming, I agreed.  That solidified the good mood.

The other kids were all busy doing something else and Steph had run home for something so I snuck off with just Bekah and she had the beach to herself.  Heaven!

After her short, solo swim time, Bekah caught up on the morning news.  :)  She was actually reading an article about owls in Jesse's Outdoor News.  He's had her read a few articles of interest from them lately and she enjoys them.

Later that day everyone had swim time.  Alarik continued to LOVE swimming!

Jesse took Alarik, Scott and Caden fishing after that.

This is Scott's new fishing hat.  It's actually Bekah's abandoned cowboy hat.  Jesse says it has character.  It sure does!

Caden was the only one to catch a fish but they all had a good time.
